4 Best Home Remedies to Fix Dry, Itchy and Flaky Scalp

Ditch the itchy scalp for good – try these home remedies.

Have you been experiencing uncontrollable itchiness and flaking on the scalp of late? Many a time, these two discomfiting conditions along with dandruff, hair loss, and soreness are some of the telltale signs you may be dealing with dryness of the scalp.

Dry scalp occurs when your scalp is unable to produce a sufficient amount of natural oils to lubricate itself. This could be caused by any number of factors such as reaction to weather changes or the presence of a harsh ingredient in any of your hair products.

Sometimes, a dry scalp situation may rear its ugly head due to too much shampooing, lack of proper hair hygiene, not drinking enough water, or the presence of skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema.

Whatever the cause might be, this post will guide you on natural and at-home treatments you can use to relieve the excessive itching and tackle your dry scalp issues.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Many people swear by the effectiveness of Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) in reducing the irritating itchiness caused by dry scalp. The liquid has antimicrobial properties which enable it to eliminate the fungi or bacteria causing your constant itching.

ACV is also a good exfoliator and anti-inflammatory which explains why it is so potent in treating the dry scalp issue in itself.

Application: To use, mix 2 parts water and 1 part apple cider vinegar together. Apply the mixture directly to your scalp and let it sit for 5 minutes. Wash out the mixture with a mild shampoo and condition your hair as normal.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is a well-known natural remedy used in enhancing the appearance of the skin as well as treating skin problems such as rash, acne, and eczema. It contains antibacterial, antifungal, and moisturizing properties which work exceptionally well for inflammation of the skin, dry scalp, and dandruff.

One advantage of using coconut oil is that besides treating your dry scalp, it’ll also make your hair look and feel silky smooth.

Application: Massage a small amount of food grade coconut oil into your scalp. Gently work your comb from the root of your hair to the tips. Wait for at least 10 minutes, then wash your hair with shampoo and condition as you normally would.

Olive Oil and Baking Soda Combo

Using the olive oil and baking soda combo is a great choice if your dry scalp condition is also accompanied by dandruff. Olive oil is a good moisturizer while baking soda comes with top-notch antibacterial and antifungal power.

Combining the two substances will give you a 3-in-1 kind of benefit – exfoliation, antifungal treatment, moisture – that can eliminate those pesky itchy white flakes ailing you.

Application: Mix 3 parts olive oil with 3 parts baking soda. Thoroughly massage the mixture into the scalp and leave it for 5 minutes. Wash off the residue from hair and apply conditioner.

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera juice or gel has strong analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antiseptic properties that can effectively treat dry scalp, skin irritation, sunburn, burns, cold sores, and even psoriasis. The moisturizing property can also help soothe an irritated skin.Application: Scoop out the gel from the aloe plant, mash it in a bowl with water and apply directly to your scalp. Wash out after 10 to 20 minutes.
